Some school districts are already back in school, and others will be soon, meaning vaccination records are relevant again.

El Rio Community Health Center is planning three vaccination clinics at Tucson-area Boys and Girls Clubhouses to help students meet state health department requirements for immunizations.

Vaccinations are critical to children's educational development, said Penny Whitley, the regional clinical director at El Rio Community Health Center.

“If a child is sick or in pain, they’re not going to learn," she said. "Children who don’t have any insurance tend not to come to routine checkups so that minor problems can be found ahead of time.”

Other health screenings will also be available, she said.

“We’re doing dental screenings and doing some fluoride treatment and the Lion’s Club is there to help do some eye exams for children to see if they need glasses," she said. The club will also try to find financial assistance for children who need glasses, Whitley added.

The event is available free for anyone, but those who do have insurance need to make sure to bring their insurance card so their immunization records are updated, Whitley said.

Those who do not have insurance may find they can enroll for coverage.

“The AHCCCS plans (state Medicaid program) also come and to help parents who don’t have any insurance to help them screen to see if they’re qualified for insurances as well," Whitley said.

Tucson Medical Center will have booster seats available at the events, and El Rio Health Center has a limited supply of free backpacks at the events, Whitley said.

The clinics are scheduled 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.:
- Sat., July 19: Jim and Vicki Click Clubhouse, 1935 S. Columbus Blvd.
- Sat., July 26: Holmes Tuttle Clubhouse, 2585 E. 36th St.
- Sat., Aug. 2: Roy Drachman Clubhouse, 5901 S. Santa Clara Road

- July 31: Tucson Unified School District
- Aug. 4: Marana Unified School District
- Aug. 5: Sunnyside Unified School District
