It's going to cost more to become a naturalized citizen beginning Monday July 30th.
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services approved hikes from 400 to 675 dollars per applicant earlier this year. Spokesperson Marie Sebrechts says the new rates are meant to pay for services provided since USCIS is a fee-based agency that receives no money from Congress.
The new amount is contributing to many more applicants at the Tucson office: 1130 in June of 2007 compared to 621 in May, 226 in April and 314 in March. In June of 2006, there were 209 applications received at the Tucson office.
