Residents in 22 Tucson neighborhoods are getting a chance to learn about the "University Area Pilot Overlay" program and decide whether to try to take part.

The program is a plan to protect historic neighborhoods within two miles of the UA. For example, it won't ban infill or development but neighborhoods might be able to have "design manuals" for new developments to have building characteristics that keep the architectural elements of the community.

The final details will be determined by the city council, urban planning staffs and neighborhoods that opt into the program.
