The Barefoot Contessa

A waning director revives his career after discovering a beautiful Spanish dancer and making her into a Hollywood star. Saturday at 9 p.m. on PBS 6.

The tragic story of Maria Vargas (Ava Gardner) unfolds at her funeral, in flashback recollections from her mourners.

Her story begins with a down on his luck veteran movie director and writer Harry Dawes (Humphrey Bogart) who is working for tycoon Kirk Edwards (Warren Stevens), who wants to produce a film. In a Madrid night club they discover the beautiful dancer Maria Vargas (Gardner). Thanks to Harry’s expertise and Edward’s money, her film debut is a sensation.

As the story unfolds, Maria’s career takes off and she is romanced by millionaires and wooed by playboys, until she is swept off her feet by an Italian count. Maria thinks she has found the love of her life, and marries the nobleman. But her happiness is doomed to end in tragedy.
