Another Democrat Enters 2nd Congressional District Race

Former state Rep. Matt Heinz, a Democrat and physician in Tucson, filed Tuesday for the 2nd Congressional District race in 2016.

Heinz filed with the Federal Election Commission to form a campaign committee. He joins Victoria Steele, a Democratic state representative, in the race to challenge first-term Republican incumbent Martha McSally.

Heinz sought the Democratic nomination for the seat in 2012, but was defeated in the primary by Ron Barber, who went on to win a special election and one full term in the House. McSally beat Barber in 2014.

Heinz served in the state House from 2009 to 2013 and departed to work for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of implementation of the Affordable Care Act. He served as provider of outreach at the agency and served more than one year before returning to Tucson.

He is an attending physician specializing in internal medicine at Tucson Medical Center.
