AZ WEEK: Honoring Arizona's Military Veterans

McSally: Making it easier for vets to get jobs; interviews with Purple Heart recipients.

Freshman U.S. Rep. Martha McSally saw her first sponsored bill signed into law this fall. The Border Jobs for Veterans Act aims to make it easier for veterans to get jobs working at U.S.-Mexico ports of entry as Customs and Border Protection officers.

“We see a problem, we see a solution, let’s figure out how to get it done,” McSally said.

Arizona Week Friday dives into the details of McSally’s bill and honors veterans by sharing the stories of three Purple Heart recipients.

On the program:

  • Guest Host Christopher Conover talks to Martha McSally about the bill she sponsored to get more veterans working at the U.S.-Mexico ports of entry.
  • AZPM’s Nancy Montoya sat down with her 90-year-old father, before he died, to talk about his experiences in World War II.
  • Mike Dyer is a Purple Heart recipient and Vietnam veteran. To many, he is also remembered as a coach for generations of basketball players at Mountain View High School.
  • Mary Herrera’s arm was amputated in a blast in Afghanistan and re-attached at a field hospital. She now works at the VA Hospital in Tucson.
  • Dr. Richard Carmona, a former U.S. Senate Candidate, received two Purple Hearts during his service in the Army Special Forces in Vietnam.
