Tucson Initiative Proposes Mayor, City Council Term Limits

If it goes on ballot, voters could choose to limit elected officials to two terms.

Listen:

A proposed initiative effort seeks to ask voters to set limits of two terms for Tucson's mayor and City Council members.

It proposes to limit City Council members to two, four-year terms and the same for mayors. The limit would apply to consecutive and non-consecutive terms, so essentially a person would max out at eight years on the council and eight years as mayor.

The effort needs 9,241 valid signatures from registered Tucson voters by July 6 to qualify for the November general election ballot.

It is the second initiative in circulation for the November Tucson ballot. The other proposes ward-only voting for primary and general elections for City Council.

Elections are now ward-only primaries and city-wide general elections. That was ruled unconstitutional by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals one week after last November's city election.

The city is appealing the ruling and simultaneously exploring putting its own proposed election change on the November ballot.
