Arizona Races Getting National Attention

National Republicans and Democrats are turning their attention to Southern Arizona

Vote Buttons Election Stock Spotlight

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is running two ads during the Republican National Convention attacking Republicans for supporting Donald Trump.

Those ads target Rep. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.) who has neither endorsed nor disavowed Trump.

The McSally campaign used the launch of the ad as a fundraising opportunity. It sent an email to supporters highlighting the ad and asking for money.

Republicans, meanwhile, attacked one of McSally’s Democratic challengers, Matt Heinz, for being named as an “emerging race.”

The Republicans called that an endorsement from Nancy Pelosi. They said that was not fair to Victoria Steele, another Democrat challenging McSally in Arizona's 2nd Congressional District.

The race for Arizona’s Second Congressional District has historically been one of the most competitive in the nation.

In 2014, McSally beat incumbent Democrat Ron Barber by 167 votes.

This year, political ratings still list the district as competitive. They, though they say it leans Republican in 2016.

Voter registration in the district is split nearly evenly between Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. Democrats held a slight registration lead in March 2016.
