The top three winners in each age category; kindergarten, first grade, second grade and third grade were selected from over 350 entries. Winners and their families were treated to an afternoon of awards, celebration and inspiring words from local author, Jennifer J. Stewart.

With guidance from teachers, families and librarians, children from across Southeastern Arizona submitted original, illustrated stories to the contest. A group of community volunteers with experience in literacy and art education served as the contest judges.

First place winners in each category advance to the national competition. Those results will be announced in mid July 2010.

This year’s contest was supported by the University of Arizona Foundation through its grants program for exemplary, innovative projects that connect the University of Arizona to the community.
