Face-Off Commentators Bruce Ash and Paul Eckerstrom say passing Proposition 100 will improve the state's financial situation but in the long run the state still faces a major budget reduction. Prop 100 passed by a nearly two-to-one margin.
The sales tax increase will take effect June 1 and raise an estimated $918 million the first year. The current state sales tax of 5.6 cents on the dollar will go up to 6.6 cents for three years. A defeat for Proposition 100 would have triggered $862 million of budget cuts for schools and other programs.
