Officials with the Pima County Recorder’s office are working to verify approximately 21,000 provisional ballots cast on Election Day, a task expected to take through the end of the week.

Provisional ballots may be used for a number of reasons, including if a voter shows up at a polling place but their registration can't immediately be confirmed. Brad Nelson, the director of Pima County Elections, said typically around 80 percent of provisional ballots are ultimately verified and counted.

Statewide, the secretary of state’s office estimates 200,000 ballots are still left to count. Most of those are provisional.
