The next generation of scientists from Southern Arizona is showing off its prowess Friday at the annual science and engineering fair at the Tucson Convention Center.

More than 2,000 projects representing every field of science, medicine, technology and engineering are on display in the exhibit halls from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission to the downtown event and parking are free.

The fair is sponsored by the Southern Arizona Research, Science and Engineering Foundation which has worked with students for 62 years. Nearly 100,000 students from kindergarten through high school participate in foundation events from science fairs to mentoring to camps. The foundation reaches students from Yuma to Florence, Casa Grande to Nogales.

The organization provides $125,000 in scholarships, internships and awards to students to attract and keep their interest in STEM - science, technology, engineering and math - fields.

The science fair will end with future innovators night starting at 5:30 p.m. with interactive science displays and activities for children and adults. Those include eating a bug, building a cactus, touching a gila monster, watching an asteroid impact and simulating flight.
