PBS WORLD Explores Immigrant Stories

Debuting in November, WORLD TV and WORLDcompass.org presents "Diaspora," poignant and compelling tales of survival, and individual struggles to come to terms with new cultures and dual identities.

From points across the globe, "Diaspora" demonstrates the widely differing cultural circumstances that cause groups and individuals to leave their roots for safer or better lives. Individual stories show the tragedy and complexity of diaspora, but also reveal the strength and creativity of immigrants to America as they seek to assimilate with their new communities

"Bronx Princess" tells how Bronx-bred teen Rocky Otoo, a second-generation immigrant, reconciles her dual legacies in this tumultuous coming-of-age story.

"Diaspora" also explores the personal journeys of second-generation immigrants as they uncover family history and traditions, and search for a better understanding of their origins.

The month wraps up with an historical perspective of American immigration, ending with "Forgotten Ellis Island” – the first film (and companion book) to be produced about the abandoned immigrant hospital on Ellis Island. As America wrestles once again with the issue of immigration, "Forgotten Ellis Island" provides a unique lens on this contentious debate. It is a powerful tribute to the best and worst of America's dealings with its new citizens-to-be.
