“The bicycle is a great benefit for almost all of our social ills,” says Tom Thivener, Tucson’s enthusiastic Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Manager. He would like to see more Tucsonans commuting by bicycle in order to stay fit, cut household transportation expenses, improve air quality and reduce gas consumption.

To encourage bicycle commuting, Thivener says it’s important to create low-stress situations for cyclists. With that in mind, Tucson has plans to develop about 170 miles of bike boulevards. Bike boulevards are residential streets that are designed to be bike-friendly by calming traffic and adding features that facilitate the movement of bikes.
