Episode 157: A Gift Gives Biosphere 2 Another Decade

Also, zooming out on the tourism industry, and the opening of a new hotel downtown.

On Metro Week, we check in with the work being done at Biosphere 2. We’ll also take a look at the state of Tucson’s tourism industry.

A gift of $30 million has guaranteed that research at Biosphere 2 will continue for at least the next decade. Metro Week looks at its past and future.


The AC Marriott has recently opened its location in downtown Tucson. Metro Week visited the hotel and sat down with Rio Nuevo Chairman Fletcher McCusker and Nick Fox, who works with the company that manages the hotel.


To gain a birds-eye view of the state of tourism in Tucson, we checked inwith local tourism office Visit Tucson, which says it pumped $213 million into the greater Tucson economy. The group’s Dan Gibson joined us in the studio to talk about how they make that conclusion


The Jewish History Museum and the Mexican Consulate in Tucson have teamed up to put on the Stone Avenue Block Party, and event intended to celebrate shared cultural roots, and understand what is not shared. We sit down with museum director Bryan Davis and Deputy Consul Enrique Gómez to talk about how this partnership came to be.

The party will take place Saturday October 7, from 7 p.m. On Stone Ave. between 16th and 17th Streets. It's free and open to the public.
