Arizona Public Media News Director Peter Michaels arrived at the shooting scene just moments after it occurred. He describes the horrific scene to reporter Mark Duggan:
"I saw several bodies ... strewn in the parking lot," says Michaels, whose wife was at the Safeway store and witnessed the shooting. Michaels also saw Congresswoman Giffords slumped over, and numerous people on the scene with blood on their clothes. Michaels says he watched as medical personnel scrambled to put Giffords in an ambulance, which then drove to a helicopter that airlifted her to the hospital.
