Operation Stonegarden; Oro Valley Development; DACA Limbo

This week the Pima County Board of Supervisors reversed a previous decision and voted to accept a federal grant for border law enforcement. Funds from Operation Stonegarden provide the Pima County Sheriff's Department with $1.4 million to cover expenses related to enforcing border security.

The deciding vote came from Democratic Supervisor Ramón Valadez, who initially rejected the grant earlier this month. Valadez appeared on Arizona 360 and explained why he changed his mind.


Flu remains widespread in Arizona, according to data from the Arizona Department of Health Services. Since October, the flu has been linked to more than 450 deaths in the state. Michael Worobey, Ph.D., heads the University of Arizona Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department. He explained why this flu season is so severe, and how research from the UA could change how scientists develop future vaccines.


While Oro Valley has a reputation as a destination for retirees, the town is going through a growth spurt. About 85 percent of the land in town is developed. Recent additions include two schools and about 80 businesses, restaurants and companies. Arizona 360 looks at the strategy behind the expansion and some of the challenges it presents.

With immigration reform and the future of DACA still up for debate in Congress, we asked immigration attorney Jose Vazquez to explain the legal dilemmas facing DACA recipients. He also discussed the process of family reunification, now commonly referred to as "chain migration."


Tucson received a perfect score in 2017 on an index that measures how inclusive municipalities are to the LGBTQ community. That reputation received a boost at the start of 2018 with the opening of the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation's Thornhill Lopez Center on 4th Avenue. Vanessa Barchfield reports on the services it provides for LGBTQ youth.
