Seen for the first time are extraordinary 8mm home movies, shot by Cooke from 1933 onwards, charting his discovery of America, his passions, and his relationships with stars such as Paulette Goddard and Charlie Chaplin. The program is a chance to see America as Cooke first saw it: the raw material for a lifetime of journalism.
The footage, discovered only after his death, offers a record of the unseen life behind Cooke's polished words, against a backdrop of an America sparkling with possibilities. The program chronicles Cooke's decades in America, friendships with Hollywood icons, celebrated journalism career and years as host of Masterpiece Theatre.
