A Capitol Fourth

Broadcast live from the U.S. Capitol featuring some of the country’s best known musicians in performance with the National Symphony Orchestra. Monday at 5 p.m. on PBS-HD.

The live PBS broadcast of A Capitol Fourth, America’s favorite Independence Day tradition, will feature unrivaled performances from some of the country’s best-known musical names topped off by the greatest display of fireworks anywhere in the nation.

capitol 4th 2010 spotlight With extended coverage of the most dazzling display of fireworks in the country, the skyline of the nation's capital will come alive with vibrant and booming pyrotechnics, set against silhouettes of national landmarks: the U.S. Capitol, the Washington Monument and the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials.

Emmy® and Golden Globe Award-winning actor Jimmy Smits will host the all-star line-up that includes: Grammy and Emmy® Award-winning actor and musician Steve Martin performing with the Steep Canyon Rangers; multi-platinum recording superstar Josh Groban; Tony, Emmy® and Golden Globe nominated star of stage and screen who has just released his debut self-titled album Matthew Morrison (Glee); American Idol winner Jordin Sparks; Rock ‘N Roll legend Little Richard performing with the cast of the Broadway smash hit Million Dollar Quartet; three-time Tony-nominated Broadway star Kelli O’Hara; and the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Jack Everly.

The event will air on PBS-HD live from the West Lawn of the United States Capitol on Monday, July 4, from 5 – 6 p.m. Encore performances will air on PBS-HD at 7 p.m. and again at 9 p.m.

Special audio encore will air at 8 p.m. on NPR 89.1FM and 1550AM and Classical 90.5FM. The two-hour audio program features A Capitol Fourth and an additional 30 minutes of music.
