Head of UA's Cancer Center Dr. David Alberts says clinical trials for cancer treatments help improve effectiveness.

The Arizona Cancer Center is one of many specialized centers now treating cancer with a more individualized approach.

"We know that even within a category of cancer, lets say lung cancer, colon cancer, ovarian cancer ... whatever it is, one patient's tumor is different from the next patient's tumor," says David Alberts, director of the Arizona Cancer Center.

The personalized treatment can even involve identifying targeted drugs for individual patients.

Alberts says there is a constant search for people to participate in clinical trials and to further research on new treatment regimens and experimental drugs. Cancer rates have risen to 1.6 million new cases per year.

"The best treatment available is an experimental drug. By far, some kind of experimental regimen is going to widen that envelope of cure," Albert says.
