History Detectives

For the first time History Detectives teams up with Antiques Roadshow to trace the story behind two people in a fascinating photograph. Tuesday at 8 p.m. on PBS-HD.

A one-of-a-kind photograph poses a jarring question: Is the African American wearing a Confederate uniform slave or free?

History Detectives host Wes Cowan first encountered this Civil War tintype in his role as an Antiques Roadshow appraiser. Now the owner of this tintype and his friend, both direct descendants of the two men in the photograph, ask Wes Cowan to track down the rest of the story.

Also on the program, did Hollywood treat the Native Americans listed in a payment ledger fairly? Then, an ornate stock certificate unlocks secrets to the earliest days of Harlem.

Tuesday at 8 p.m. on PBS-HD.
