Bellini's Norma

The Metropolitan Opera

Broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera continue on Classical 90.5 at 11:00 a.m. this Saturday, January 14th, with a performance of Norma by Vincenzo Bellini, with a libretto by Felice Romani after Norma, ossia L'infanticidio ("Norma, or The Infanticide") by Alexandre Soumet. The performance will be sung in Italian and will run approximately three hours.

Joan Sutherland leads the dream cast in this historic encore broadcast of Bellini's best known opera, recorded on April 4, 1970. The production of the tale of forbidden love and self sacrifice also stars Marilyn Horne, Carlo Bergonzi and Cesear Siepi. Richard Bonynge (the late Dame Joan Sutherland's husband) conducts.
