COVID-19 cases are surging in Arizona, two weeks after Gov. Doug Ducey allowed his stay-at-home order to expire.

Data from the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University shows the state adding an average of 638 cases per day over the last seven days. Just a week ago, the state was averaging 338 cases per day.

The numbers reflect both an increase in the total daily number of tests, and a growing percentage of positive results.

The number of people hospitalized for the coronavirus is also reaching new highs. Hospitalizations reached 1,009 on Monday and grew to 1,092 the next day, according to the state Department of Health Services. Tuesday's total includes 379 people in intensive care and 239 on ventilators.

The state Department of Health Services reported 40 new deaths on Wednesday, bringing the fatality toll to 981. The total number of cases in Arizona stood at 22,223.
