The state Senate Education Committee has appointed Dr. Ram Krishna of Yuma and former legislator Greg Patterson of Scottsdale to the Arizona Board of Regents.
Gov. Jan Brewer nominated both to serve on the board, which provides policy guidance to the state's public universities, for the next eight years.
Krishna’s confirmation hearing was brief and unanimous. Patterson’s confirmation lasted more than an hour.
Patterson was questioned about his online political blog, and said that if he was confirmed to serve on ABOR his blog would “go dark” and he would not blog for “some time.”
Democratic Sen. David Schapira read blog posts written by Patterson where he criticized university presidents and questioned the economic value of liberal arts degrees and, at times, the role of higher education. Patterson addressed the committee and responded to each post.
Schapira's was the sole vote against Patterson’s confirmation.
If confirmed by the entire Arizona Senate, Krishna would replace former legislator and current chairman Bob McLendon, and Patterson would replace attorney Ernest Calderon.
