An Arizona legislative conference committee has approved a compromise plan to allow electronic billboards in some parts of the state.

The bill would protect other areas from the lighted billboards that astronomers say can ruin their view of the night sky.

Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed a bill to allow the billboards following a November court ruling that declared them illegal under a decades-old highway beautification law.

Some Republicans pushed legislation to amend the old law, but astronomers objeced, saying the bright lights would pollute the night sky and make it more difficult for telescopes.

Arizona has some of the world's most powerful telescopes and a robust astronomy industry.
