The commander at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson is leaving his position for a job at the Pentagon.
The base announced Monday that Col. John A. Cherrey will leave for his new assignment in June.
He will be assigned to Headquarters Air Force in a branch that focuses on evaluating future strategies and operational concepts.
Cherrey has served as commander of the base and the 355th Fighter Wing since June 2010.
He will be replaced at Davis-Monthan by Col. Kevin E. Blanchard, who is currently serving at Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan as the vice wing commander of the 451st Air Expeditionary Wing.
Blanchard has been stationed at Davis-Monthan twice before — first as an A-10 pilot, then in several command staff jobs.
