Hundreds of people get together at the "Meet Me at Maynards" event in downtown Tucson every Monday evening, running, walking and engaging in other activities that encourage exercise and patronizing local businesses.
The concept is popular, and growing numbers of people are participating in a similar version at La Encantada shopping center on the Santa Catalina Mountains foothills.
It's called Meet Me at La Encantada, and it's been going on since March, every Wednesday.
Tim Bentley, business development officer at the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, says the events are a great way to exercise, meet new people and explore the shopping venues.
"Our goals are fitness, community involvement, and we still want to drive people to support local restaurants, local businesses in our community whether it's downtown or in the foothills," Bentley says.
Among participants is Kathleen Kirk, group leader for a 1.5 mile walk. She teaches an exercise class before the walk.
"I love it. I look forward to Wednesdays," Kirk says. "I feel like I'm inspired and I can help inspire others. I was born to move and to be able to share that with other people it's really a great thing."
Bentley says more people will get an opportunity to participate since the concept is spreading to other parts of the country.
The check-in for Meet Me at La Encantada is 5:15 pm Wednesdays at the northwest corner of Campbell Avenue and Skyline Drive.
