World-famous opera singer, Alice Alquist, is strangled to death in her home in London, leaving an orphaned niece behind. The murderer is never found and the London home at No. 9 Thornton Square is closed up.

The young niece, Paula (Ingrid Bergman), goes to Italy to study opera with Maestro Guardi, the same teacher who trained her famous aunt. After years of study, Paula meets pianist Gregory Anton (Boyer), and falls in love with him. Maestro Guardi encourages the romance, and Paula gives up her training to marry Gregory.

They move back to her aunt’s home at No. 9 Thornton Square in London, and Paula’s memories of the murder resurface. To make it easier for Paula, Gregory insists the aunt’s belongings be stored in the attic. At this point strange things begin happening to Paula and Gregory convinces Paula she is insane.

One person is convinced Paula is sane – Inspector Brian Cameron of Scotland Yard (Joseph Cotton) who admired Alice Alquist for years and had a chance meeting with Paula, whom he mistakes for her aunt. The inspector begins to investigate the unsolved murder. He soon discovers Gregory is not who he claims to be. This leads to a startling discovery about the murder of Alice Alquist and what is behind the strange episodes leading to Paula’s emotional instability.
