Entomologist Justin Schmidt has a passion for insects. During his career, he has studied Hymenoptera: mostly bees, wasps, and ants. Schmidt has inadvertently felt the pain of almost every biting and stinging species he has encountered. He is well known for rating the pain on a scale of one to four by creating the Schmidt Sting Pain Index. He says the Sonoran desert is home to the greatest number of stinging and biting insects in the United States.
At the University of Arizona, he is a member of the Center For Insect Science and an adjunct instructor in the Department of Entomology, teaching medical entomology as well as a more general natural history class. “Enthusiasm is contagious” he says. Watch to catch the buzz.
