Dr. Jean-Paul Bierny is a retired radiologist who moved to Tucson in the 1970s while he was working on his career, but then discovered another interest, one that has now been his respite for decades.

Bierny has been the president of the Arizona Friends of Chamber Music for 35 years, and he was recently recognized by the Tucson Pima Arts Council for his commitment to the arts.

Bierny is one of 11 individuals or organizations who received a 2012 "Lumie." The awards recognize local luminaries who support or contribute to the Southern Arizona arts scene.

Bierny has co-founded the annual Tucson Winter Chamber Music Festival, the Piano & Friends concert series, and the Commissioning Program focused on the composition of chamber music.

It's been a lot of work over the decades, but Bierny says it's been worth every minute.

"[Because of] The music primarily, but also working with a superb volunteer board of people who are there not because they have a well-known name in the community or a lot of funds but because they love what we are doing and they want it to work," Bierny says.
