AZ Voter Numbers Decline

Down 1.4% heading into next week's primary election

The number of Arizonans registered to vote declined 1.4 percent in the last two months, the Secretary of State's Office reports.

The report for August, posted on the secretary of state's website, showed a decline of more than 45,000 in the voter rolls since June, affecting both major parties and independents.

Slightly more than 3.1 million state residents are registered to vote. Republicans lead the way with 35.9 percent of all registered voters. Independents are next at 33.1 percent, and Democrats total 30.2 percent. Libertarians, Greens and other parties total 0.8 percent.

Voters registered with a political party are eligible to vote for that party's candidates in the primary election Aug. 28. Independents may vote in the primary by selecting one party and voting for its candidates.

Voter registration for the general election in November is open until Oct. 9. To register, voters may go to any political party headquarters, to their county recorder's office or at public libraries. Information on eligibility to vote is available from the Secretary of State's Office.
