The Republican National Committee stripped Arizona of half of its voting delegates because the state held its presidential primary election earlier than the RNC wanted.
Officials with the Arizona Republican Party were hoping that as the time for the convention neared, RNC officials would relent and reinstate the delegates. That did not happen.
Bruce Ash, Republican national committeeman from Tucson, says despite the loss of delegates he still thinks the state made the right choice scheduling the primary in February.
Two years ago, Phoenix was in the running to host this year’s Republican convention. At the time, Ash raised the concern of hurricanes hitting Tampa if that city were awarded the convention.
The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Isaac could hit the Tampa area next week.
