On Tuesday, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly questioned Secretary of Defense nominee Peter Hegseth during a confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Kelly, a Navy combat veteran, began by requesting a second round of questioning.

He then pressed Hegseth to respond to reports of intoxicated behaviors with a true or false.

Hegseth responded to each question by stating, “anonymous smears.”

“My leadership has been completely impugned on these veterans organizations that did fantastic work,” Hegseth said.

Kelly expressed concerns about Hegseth’s lack of transparency.

“It’s clear to me that you’re not being honest with us or the American people, because you know the truth would disqualify you from getting the job,” Kelly said.

Kelly added that beyond the disqualifying accusations, having a Secretary of Defense who is not transparent is troubling.
