Steampunks' Invasion of Old Tucson

A three-day event for enthusiasts of the sci-fi culture genre.

Story by Laura Taflinger

Re-imagining world history is common in literary sci-fi.

Steampunk is a genre of sci-fi culture that looks at how civilization would be different if technology had remained dependent on steam-power instead of electricity.

Steampunks are characterized by clothing that embraces a futuristic version of the Victorian era, and accessories inspired by the looks of steam-powered machinery.

Back in March, Old Tucson Studios hosted Wild Wild West Steampunk Convention, a three-day gathering for steampunk enthusiasts that received visitors from all over the state.

"Arizona didn't originally have a steampunk festival," says Diana Given, co-owner of Wild Wild West Steampunk Convention. "Old Tucson was the perfect location. Victorian times were happening all over the world, (including the Wild West)."
