Voter registration for the general election next week is up in every Arizona county except Maricopa, the Secretary of State's Office reports.
The registration tallies were posted this week on the Secretary of State's website and show the state with 3.24 million registered voters, down 0.3 percent from the primary election total.
All of the decline is driven by Maricopa County, which was down more than 38,000, or 1.9 percent, from the primary election. Nearly 1.94 million Maricopa County residents are registered.
A Secretary of State's spokesman said Maricopa County moved a large number of registered voters to the "inactive" list because their addresses could not be verified. They can become eligible to vote once they verify their addresses.
The spokesman said that Maricopa County registration rose by 31,000, to just above 2 million, if the inactive voters were taken out of the calculation.
Pima County had a 2.2 percent increase from the primary, to 498,657. That includes 179,046 Democrats, 151,097 Republicans and 164,431 independents.
Independent voters continue to increase in number at the expense of Arizona's two major parties. Independents make up 35.8 percent of all those registered, a slight increase from the primary election. Republicans are at 34.5 percent and Democrats at 28.9 percent, both representing slight declines.
