Matinee broadcasts from The Metropolitan Opera continue on Classical 90.5 at 11:00 a.m. this Saturday, December 27, with a performance of La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. The opera is based on La dame aux Camélias (1852), a play adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas, fils. The title La Traviata means literally "The Fallen Woman" or The Woman Who Strayed." The opera was originally entitled Violetta, after the main character. The performance will run approximately two hours and fifty minutes.
Love, sacrifice and redemption: the dazzling heroine of La Traviata embodies all three in one of opera’s most beloved stories. The story of Violetta Valéry—a Parisian courtesan who makes the fatal mistake of falling in love—has defined romantic tragedy since 1848 when the Dumás novel that inspired Verdi appeared. Verdi’s opera paints a picture of a glittering Second Empire Paris, the serenity of Violetta’s country estate and the heroine’s fate on a cold, pre-Lenten morning. Marco Armiliato conducts.
