Massenet's Manon - March 21, 2015

The Metropolitan Opera

Matinee broadcasts from The Metropolitan Opera continue on Classical 90.5 at 10:00 a.m. this Saturday, March 21, with a performance of Manon by Jules Massenet, set to a French libretto by Henri Meilhac and Philippe Gille, based on the 1731 novel L’histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut by the Abbé Prévost. The opera was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on January 19, 1884. The Met's performance will run approximately four hours and ten minutes.

What is more desirable: true love or a life of wealth and privilege? Manon decides in favor of the latter and the consequences are disastrous. Fresh from her recent Met triumphs in La Sonnambula, La Traviata, and Rigoletto, Diana Damrau takes on another high-flying soprano role for the first time with the company: Massenet's beguiling heroine who lives for love and luxury. Tenor Vittorio Grigolo is the man she loves. Emmanuel Villaume conducts.
