Tucson volunteers will help the homeless enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday again this year.

The Salvation Army is preparing its 30th annual dinner on Thanksgiving Day.

That Thursday, volunteers expect to serve 2,500 people at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 1145 E. Fort Lowell Rd.

Spokeswoman Shawna Kroh said the organization is still looking for food donations.

“We have turkeys, but we still need the fixings: stuffing, instant potatoes, green beans, canned corn, yams, cranberry sauce," she said.

Tuesday marks the 16th year for Thanksgiving In The Barrio at El Pueblo Neighborhood Center, 101 Irvington Rd.

Project coordinator Mary Ornelas said she is looking ahead to a busy, but rewarding day for the event’s volunteers.

“Overall happy and really, really grateful that they were able to help out," she said. "And a lot of them stay until the last person’s gone.”

They will be serving food starting at 11:30 a.m.

And the Gospel Rescue Mission will hold its 26th annual Thanksgiving Banquet Wednesday at 11 a.m., where more than 350 volunteers will serve up to 3,000 meals at the mission’s shelter for men, 312 W. 28th St.
