Poor little rich girl Ellen Andrews (Claudette Colbert) is being held on her father’s yacht until she agrees to annul her rebellious marriage to society aviator King Westley, when she decides to run away. Eluding her father’s detectives, who lose her by underestimating her determination, Ellen reluctantly connects with down and out reporter Peter Warne (Clark Gable). Peter threatens to blow the whistle on Ellen to her father, unless she sticks with him until he gets her back to her husband. What Peter really wants is a juicy newspaper story.
