Puccini's Tosca - July 11, 2015

Lyric Opera of Chicago

Tosca_06-13-2015

Broadcasts from the Lyric Opera of Chicago continue on Classical 90.5 at noon this Saturday, July 11, with a performance of Tosca by Giacomo Puccini, set to a libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, based on the play La Tosca by Victorien Sardo. The performance will be sung in Italian and will run approximately three hours. Dmitri Jurowski conducts.

An idealistic artist, a celebrated singer and a corrupt police chief engage in a fierce battle of wills in this tempestuous tale of cruelty and deception. Rome in the year 1800 is a deadly place for dissidents. The painter Cavaradossi risks everything to shelter his comrade; but his lover, the fiery Tosca, keeps playing cat and mouse with the lustful and sadistic Baron Scarpia, the chief of police. If Cavaradossi is condemned, will Tosca trade her honor to save him? With its themes of political intrigue, sexual intimidation and official hypocrisy, Puccini’s great melodrama set in 1800 is anything but dated.
