The University of Arizona is offering free parking and car-pooling services to students, faculty and staff who normally ride Tucson's municipal buses to get to campus.

A strike in its 19th day Monday has limited the city's Sun Tran bus system to about 20 percent of its normal daily capacity, including weekday operations only on eight of its routes. Another 35 routes have no service.

Nearly 1,000 members of the campus community hold Sun Tran bus passes, known as U-Passes, for the fall semester or the full school year, said a spokeswoman for UA Parking and Transportation Services. She said they are eligible for free parking at the Highland Garage on East Helen Street until the strike ends.

Additionally, the spokeswoman said, university officials were encouraging people to use the Zimride car-pooling service to get to and from campus. New Zimride users have risen 37 percernt since before the strike, which began Aug. 5.

Two Sun Tran bus routes that are operating during the strike pass the campus, the No. 4 route on East Speedway Boulevard and the No. 3 route on East 6th Street.
