Listen:
Tucsonans will be able to make their way to the Big Apple on a nonstop flight starting on October 7.
American Airlines will offer one daily flight between Tucson International Airport and New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport.
The flight will leave Tucson at 7:57 a.m. or 8:57 a.m. (depending on daylight savings time), and arrive in New York at 4:00 pm. Flights will leave JFK at 5:00 p.m. and arrive in Tucson at 8:12 p.m. or 9:12 p.m.
TIA officials think this could be the first of multiple new routes offered at the airport in the future.
“It’s a very convenient airport," said Tucson Airport Authority Board Member Bill Assenmacher. "It’s very comfortable. And even though it’s small, it’s basically underused. So getting a few new flights, especially longer distance flights, will really make it easier to travel in and out of Tucson.”
Tucson International has been without a direct flight to New York since 2008.
The last new route added at TIA came in 2011, when Alaska Airlines began service to Portland, Oregon.
