The Tucson Police Department made 246 traffic stops during New Year’s weekend and made 30 DUI arrests.
Five of those were for extreme intoxication, which refers to a blood alcohol content above 0.15.
This year's arrests were up significantly versus the 2015-2016 New Year's holiday, when only six people got DUIs, said Sergeant Terrence O’Hara.
One factor in the increase was likely that more cops were out on city streets this year. O’Hara said the DUI squad was fully staffed last weekend and had assistance from other units.
Last year, personnel issues meant there were fewer cops out patrolling for impaired drivers.
