An American journalist, radio personality and senior host of the Weekend Edition Sunday newsmagazine, Hansen's experience in broadcast journalism includes working as a reporter, producer, and host for local and national programs. Her first participation in NPR programming was in 1976 when she was a production assistant and substitute host for Fresh Air. In 1979, she formally joined NPR as a production assistant for All Things Considered. Hansen joined Weekend Edition Sunday in November 1989.
Hansen's greatest concern was that she give stations and listeners enough notice to make her transition a smooth one. For this reason, she proposed sharing this news with listeners a full year in advance. She intends to spend her retirement near the ocean on the eastern shore and continue her relationship with public radio as a freelancer.
