Pima Community College East Campus is launching a program aimed at graduating more Latino Students in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM.

The efforts are being backed by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education for $3.1 million over the next five years. The plan is to reach Latino high school students in Southern Arizona.

Guadalupe Waitherwerch, the project coordinator, says the program is aimed at first-generation students who may have the ability but not the confidence to go to college.

“We want them to feel like they belong in college to begin with and … be able to believe that they can succeed.”

The program will have a special area for students to meet, study and get counseling. Staff will provide one-on-one shadowing and guidance from the first day they start classes through graduation. The goal is to make sure not one student in the program falls through the cracks.
