Five Mexican consulate offices in Arizona are launching “Know Your Rights” meetings for Mexican citizens confused about the Trump administration's immigration policies.
It was standing room only at the Mexican consulate’s small meeting room in Nogales, Arizona, one night this week. More than 100 people came to hear from immigration lawyers and U.S. immigration officials.
Most of those who attended are legally in the U.S., according to Ricardo Santana Velasquez, Mexican consul in Nogales.
“You know, here on the border, it is usual that they cross many times. They cross over to go shopping at the ports of entry or for relative activities,” Velazquez said. “And yet many are afraid to cross into Mexico for fear they will not be able to return to the U.S. “
He says these clinics are taking place all over Arizona “to explain to them, to assist them, to inform them about the immigration laws and the process that they need to follow.”
