Episode 68: Climate Effects on Rangelands

Researching the climatic and management effects on the sustainability of rangelands.

Arizona Science spot Arizona Science, Fridays on NPR 89.1

The USDA and the Southwest Watershed Research Center are currently conducting research into the climatic and management effects on the sustainability of rangelands as affected by runoff and erosion. Field research is taking place at several sites across the country and here in Arizona. The research covers rangelands, forests and riparian areas according to Chandra Holifield-Collins, a soil scientist with the USDA. In the semiarid southwestern U.S. population is expected to increase by 50% by 2030 which will dramatically increase society's need to manage its water, soil and nutrient resources.
