WaveLengths

Every aspect of our lives is touched by science in this episode of Wavelengths we will meet experts on topics ranging from earthquakes to wild life protection to cosmology. Tuesday October 7th at 9pm on KUAT6 and HD.

WaveLengths

Join host, Vicki Chandler for a journey to the frontiers of science on this second edition of WaveLengths:

CORN GENETICS AND CANCER RESEARCH

It has been known for years that cancer is often associated with certain genes being silenced, and for two decades Vicki Chandler has been studying how genes are silenced in corn. Currently, Chandler is collaborating with Arizona Cancer Center scientists to see if similar silencing processes happen in humans. Initial results are promising, and could pave the way to identify cancer earlier and develop new treatments.

MOUNT LEMMON SKYCENTER

You don’t have to be an astronomer to have access to the universe. A new public astronomy program launched by The University of Arizona invites people to rub elbows with leading scientists and see for themselves magnificent features of the cosmos. It all takes place at a premiere telescopic site on the peak of Mount Lemmon.

SEA TURTLES AND THE SEA OF CORTEZ

From the Sky Island of Mount Lemmon to islands in the Sea of Cortez in Mexico scientists are conducting fascinating research not just to enrich our knowledge of our planet but to help protect it. In the early 20th century, the Sea of Cortez was brimming with a variety of marine life, including the sea turtle. Sadly because of pollution and overfishing the sea turtle almost vanished. Now the efforts of an international conservation team along with local fisherman are helping to bring them back.

THE NEXT MAJOR EARTHQUAKE

Many aspects of planet earth we have no control over, in this story a geoscientist visits the San Andreas Fault in California where experts predict it is only a matter of time before the next major earthquake hits.

THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

The Hubble Space Telescope has completely changed our view of the universe. Since it was launched more than two decades ago, it has been sending us picture postcards of our cosmos and made discoveries we never thought possible... now astronauts aboard the shuttle Atlantis will be flying to Hubble to make it better than ever.
