This 1950 musical stars Betty Hutton as Annie Oakley and Howard Keel as Frank Butler, with music by Irving Berlin.
When Buffalo Bill's Wild West show visits Cincinnati, Ohio, the show’s star, Frank Butler, challenges anyone in town to a shooting match. A local hotel owner learns that Annie Oakley is an expert shot and enters her in the shooting match.
Annie Oakley wins the contest, and the show’s management team of Buffalo Bill and Charlie Davenport ask her to join the Wild West Show. During their work for Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, Frank Butler and Annie Oakley fall in love. However, Annie’s rise to star of the show proves a problem and Frank quits Buffalo’s Bill’s Wild West Show to join the competing Pawnee Bill’s Show.
Both shows tour Europe, face financial problems, and as the stars work through their emotions, the touring companies realize they must merge to survive.
Saturday at 9 p.m. on PBS-HD.
