Tax prep sessions canceled due to coronavirus

Locals counting on free help filing will have to go it alone due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19.

Pima County and United Way have closed two sites for free tax help this week and next due to coronavirus concerns.

The Valet Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax-preparation help to families with income below $66,000. It's sponsored by Pima County Community Services, Employment and Training and the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona.

The following two sites have been canceled:

  • March 17-19 -- Nanini Library, 7300 N. Shannon Rd.

  • March 24-26 -- Pima County Youth Employment Center, 340 N. Commerce Park Loop

United Way announced it’s canceling tax sessions through April 6. Between now and then, the organization recommends eligible taxpayers use Get Your Refund, a website that allows people to file their taxes with customer support without having to leave their homes.

United Way said it plans to reopen its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites on April 6.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced Tuesday the federal government will give individuals and many businesses 90 extra days to send in money owed, but unless you file an official extension, the April 15 deadline remains the same.
